Department of Surgical Oncology News

The Department of Surgical Oncology of the Medical University of Lublin is the only academic unit of cancer surgery in the south-east of Poland. It employs specialists both in the field of surgical oncology (three independent academic positions with Professor and Associate Professor degrees), and in the field of clinical oncology (chemo- and radiotherapist). The Department consists of a surgery and a chemotherapy ward. Intraoperative radiotherapy treatment has been implemented in December 2005. Laparoscopic surgery with the use of endoscopic gamma probe is currently being underway. Medical advice is offered in the Oncological and in the Surgical Oncology Outpatient Clinics. The Department provides combined treatment of breast, digestive system, thyroid, soft tissues, and skin neoplasms, including melanoma.

 

Fields of activity

The Department has gained a vast experience in breast-conserving treatment and in sentinel lymph node biopsy using double dye-isotope method. There are breast reconstructive procedures using prostheses and oncoplastic procedures using patient’s own tissues performed. Modern treatment regimens are used in chemotherapy (docetaxel). Intraoperative radiotherapy by means of Intrabeam PRS 500 (Photon Radiosurgery System) has been implemented in December 2005 for the breast-conserving treatment. (read all)
